Sia is a Risen, a genetically engineered, sapient, and psychic dolphin on board a science-ship sent to check the stability of a terraformed planet, Ptaal, that lost contact with the Ninth Democracy 300 years before.
Also on board is her human friend, Harp, the result of an illegal experiment that attempted to make a psychic human.
Both of them look forward to their first mission, because none of the alien Viciss show signs of targeting Ptaal.
Sia and Harp are wrong.
Because the Viciss aren’t coming.
They’ve already arrived.
Highsong Highsong Book 1 eBook Laura Jennings
A boy and a genetically engineered dolphin must develop their psychic powers to save a lost colony from alien domination.Highsong is a fun young adult sci-fi novella in the tradition of David Brin. An unusual boy and a sentient dolphin end up the only people on a crashed ship who have the skills to defeat their alien enemies. But first, they have to understand what happened to the planet.
The beginning is slow, but after the stage has been set, things pick up. The dolphin character especially is the center of a very entertaining story about the cut-off dolphin communities of this lost colony.
There isn't time in this novella for much characterization, but what there is is good. The two main characters are believable and the action sequences feature some truly hideous oceanic monsters.
This is a great book for young adults with a love of music and marine biology (and adults who like the same).

Highsong Highsong Book 1 eBook Laura Jennings Reviews
Note The author provided me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
First things first. This is well-written, organized, and a stellar showing of Jennings' talent. No doubt we'll see a lot more from her in the future and I sincerely look forward to her future work.
For me, I was expecting more of a harder science fiction than a young adult toned novella. So, in that case, I was disappointed. Though, to be fair to the author, that's my fault and not the fault of her work. My interest in the book faded a couple of times in the book, mostly because I struggled to connect with Harp (the human boy) and Sia (the dolphin).
In the end, if the combination of dolphins and space travel interests you in the least, this is definitely the book for you. I'd also recommend this as a "gateway book" for anyone who hasn't read any science fiction. It has enough imagination to be different and interesting, without reading like a technical journal or assuming a base knowledge of common science fiction terms and plotlines.
It's worth picking up and giving a try.
The art of storytelling is well captured in this piece, which kept me turning pages from the moment I purchased it to the moment I finished. The novel features a unique premise, a complex plotline, and refreshingly well-developed characters. At this price, it's a steal.
Remember SeaQuest 2032/DSV, that show from the 90's with talking dolphins? Well, this is kind of like that, but on a galactic level. It's fun, fast-paced, and really intriguing. The only complaint I have is that I wish it was longer and gave more of a back story for some of the characters, especially Harp. The ending definitely leaves an opening for a sequel, so here's hoping.
Great work, Ms. Jennings, I look forward to seeing more of your work.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a quick read, I was able to read it in a matter of hours, but also challenging in I was unfamiliar with several of the words used by the author, which is something I've missed about reading. I found the characters easy to relate to, but even if they hadn't been, the world painted by Jennings' words kept me enthralled. I immediately purchased the sequel, "Risen," and finished it with equal enthusiasm. I anxiously await the next books in this series.
As read by Bill Hader's Stefan.
If you like reading then Laura Jennings' debut novella, Highsong is the world wide web's hottest e-book.
It's got psychic porpoises, tubes filled with water and space ships!
It's got character's names with too many consonants, characters named after musical instruments, and even characters names that look just like typos!
It's got ships and slips, whales with tails, pods and rods!
This book has a mixture of complexity, good action and awesome characters.
Their is a "Star Trek" and "Ecco the Dolphin" (Defender of Earth's Future game) atmosphere within the story, especially with "Ecco".
Locuxu, Sia and the Pattal dolphins in turn wear cybernetic/mechanical harnesses.
There is a level in "Ecco the Dolphin Defender of Earth's Future" where "Ecco" wears a harness to get through the level.
No doubt the author was thinking about/playing this game when she wrote the book, If not it is a interesting coincidence.
Pros
The action in the book is well done and keeps you glued to the pages.
The character are well written and believable
Con
Complex in terminology, I was unable to grasp what a "Highsong" or Mindnote was or to what the alien race after the good guys were capable of.
The cover of the book is amazing, it looks like a scene from a well done animated short.
Spoiler
This scene actual happens in the book where a octopus creature is trying to pull in Sia (the dolphin) and she destroys it with her "Highsong"
ability.
